Mamata Banerjee leads Kolkata rally on wheelchair

Ms Banerjee held a roadshow from Gandhi Murti in Kolkata to Hazra days after she was allegedly attacked by some people in Nandigram.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday held her first campaign rally days after sustaining leg injury during election campaign. While sitting on a wheelchair with her leg in a cast, Ms Banerjee held a roadshow from Gandhi Murti in Kolkata to Hazra days after she was allegedly attacked by some people in Nandigram, the place from where she will be contesting election.

"My body is full of bruises. But my pain is not greater than the suffering of people as democracy is being trampled through dictatorship," Ms Banerjee said. "I will continue to roam around Bengal on this wheelchair. If I go on bed rest, who will reach out to the people of Bengal?" the Chief Minister added.

Ms Banerjee said that though she faced a lot of attacks in her life, she never surrendered before anyone. She asserted that she would never bow her head and warned her opponents by saying that "an injured tiger gets more dangerous." Hundreds of party workers and supporters were present in the roadshow.

West Bengal Assembly elections to 294 seats will be held in eight phases from March 27 to April 29 while the counting of votes will take place on May 2.
