Mamata Banerjee to contest from Nandigram in assembly polls

Mamata Banerjee announced that she will contest from Nandigram Assembly.

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday that she will contest the forthcoming assembly polls from the seat of Nandigram. Ms Banerjee addressed people at a rally and said, "I will contest from Nandigram Assembly. If possible I will contest from both Bhawanipur and Nandigram.''

Mamata Banerjee took a jibe at Suvendu Adhikari, who recently joined BJP and had won the seat in 2016 as a TMC candidate, by making the announcement. "I will come again and again as Nandigram is my lucky place. In the 2016 election, I announced my election from Nandigram. Today also I came to Nandigram. TMC will win in 2021," Ms Banerjee said. She also added that if she is not able to contest from Bhawanipur, she will provide a "good candidate" for the constituency.

Mr Adhikari also announced that he too will contest from Nandigram. "If I can't defeat her by half lakh votes, I will quit politics," he said. The assembly elections to 294 seats in West Bengal are likely to take place in April-May.
