Man dugs a canal for more than a decade single-handedly.

3 km long water canal was dug by a man in Gaya, Bihar.

Laungi Bhuiyan, a 65 year old resident of Kothilwa village in Gaya district of Bihar dug up a 3 Km long canal that too single handedly to bring water for irrigation into the village for 30 years. The story of this extraordinary man came to the light when Anand Mahindra, an industrialist tweeted about him comparing him to another hero, Dasrath Manjhi, who carved a rocky mountain for 20 years to make a path out of it and came to be known as ‘Mountain Man’.

Kothilwa has always suffered from a shortage of water. The remote village belongs to the Dalit community and most residents are poor marginal workers. The village falls on the “red corridor” the areas under the influence of outlawed Maoist groups.

Many villagers have migrated to other regions as there is shortage of water and its became difficult for them even to grow survival crops. Many requests have been made to state government in the matter but there’s no action regarding the matter.

“They told me I was wasting my time doing this. I would not get any wage for this. So, they asked me what will I eat? ” Bhuiyan said in an interview. Ramrati Devi, wife of Bhuiya called him “mad” and tried everything to make him focus more on their children by even denying him food because of what it seemed like an impossible dream. “I was always angry with angry with him for not caring about the children. There was never any money, never enough food,” his wife Devi added.
