Rampur, UP:  On Wednesday, a man accused of raping a girl was arrested after an encounter with the police.

Ashok Kumar Shukla, Superintendent of Police, said the incident of rape of a two-and-a-half-year-old girl was registered at the Azim Nagar police station on Tuesday night.

"The police team immediately took the girl to the hospital in critical condition from where she was shifted to a hospital in Moradabad. A case was registered regarding this incident and different teams were formed to arrest the accused," he said. 

The accused Khemkaran Saini was later arrested by police.

"Saini opened fire at the police and the team retaliated following which the accused received a bullet injury in his leg.

He was arrested and taken to hospital," the officer added.

According to NCRB 2021 report, Rajasthan witnessed the highest number of rapes among Indian states, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

The national capital of Delhi continued to have the highest incidence of rape at 1,226 cases in 2021, while Jaipur had the highest rape rate (34 per 100,000 population).

Kolkata had the least number of rape cases registered among metropolitan cities.
