Manipur govt withdraws previous order to turn away Myanmar refugees

The previous order that was sent out on March 26, was against the local authorities who were setting up food and shelter camps for the citizens of Myanmar who have been trying to escape the military coup.

The Manipur government withdrew an earlier order that directed authorities to "politely turn away" Myanmar refugees who are trying to seek refuge in India. The previous order that was sent out on March 26, was against the local authorities who were setting up food and shelter camps for the citizens of Myanmar who have been trying to escape the military coup.

The state Home department had instructed the deputy commissioners of Chandel, Tengnoupal, Kamjong, Ukhrul, and Churachandpur to ensure that Aadhar enrollment was stopped immediately and the officials had been asked to submit an 'action report' taken on the matter by Tuesday, reported NDTV. The Home Department on Monday withdrew the order and H Gyan Prakash, Special Home Secretary to the state government, said in the letter that "the contents of the letter have been misconstrued and interpreted differently."

Mr Prakash added that the government has been taking all humanitarian steps and has taken the injured Myanmar refugees to Imphal for treatment. Reportedly, Myanmar's Ambassador to the United Nations had earlier appealed to India and the various governments of its states bordering the country to provide shelter to refugees due to the humanitarian crisis unfolding there. The ruling Biren Singh government's order was criticized on social media as many called it inhumane to not help Myanmar citizens who are seeking refuge.
