MANY UNIVERSITIES WILL GRANT MENSTRUAL LEAVE IN SOUTH KERALA

73% attendance compulsory for girls...

India: In southern Kerala many universities have decided to give menstrual leave to female students.

Earlier, it was considering giving menstrual leaves to female students in all state universities coming under the Department of Higher Education, the Kerala government said.

“Taking into consideration the mental and physical difficulties faced by female students during menstruation, necessary steps will be taken to implement menstrual leave in all universities,” Higher Education Minister R Bindu said in a Facebook post on Monday.

Grant menstrual leave to girl’s students in universities like Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, the move came afterwards.

Usually students required to maintain 75 per cent attendance to appear in examinations, but in CUSAT University girl students have been given leverage of 2 per cent in attendance requirements, which means girls will now be required to have only 73 per cent of attendance.

After seeing requests from students’ union, has been over 8,000 students and more than half of them are girls, the decision was taken.

“Having considered the requests for menstruation benefits to female students, the Vice-Chancellor has ordered to sanction an additional 2 per cent of condonation of shortage of attendance to female students, in each semester, subject to reporting to the Academic Council,” a recent order issued by the joint registrar of CUSAT had said. The Education Minister hailed the order.

Female in students in many other universities also raised similar demand after CUSAT’s order. Kerala’s Kottayam Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU) in December, had become the first university in the state which had granted maternity leave of 60 days to degree and postgraduate students of 28 years and above.
