Remembering Mahatma Gandhi's Legacy

On January 30, we commemorate the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation, who was assassinated on this day in 1948 by Nathuram Vinayak Godse, just five months and 15 days after India gained independence from British Rule.

On the 76th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's passing, let's delve into some facts about Bapu:

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the iconic proponent of peace and non-violence, was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar. Married to Kasturba at the age of 13, he pursued legal training at the Inner Temple in London.

In 1893, he relocated to South Africa to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit, where he resided for 21 years. It was during this time that Gandhi initiated non-violent resistance in a campaign for civil rights.

In 1915, Gandhi returned to India, mobilizing farmers and urban laborers to protest against discrimination. Pioneering the Satyagraha and Ahimsa movements, he staunchly opposed British colonial rule.

His non-violent methods and capacity to inspire through love and tolerance left an enduring mark on civil rights movements.

Dedicating his life to India's freedom struggle, Gandhi led nationwide campaigns against untouchability and poverty. Additionally, he ardently advocated for women's rights, leaving a lasting impact on various aspects of social justice.

On January 30, 1948, at around 5:17 pm, while en route to an evening prayer meeting at Birla Bhavan, Delhi, accompanied by his grandnieces, Mahatma Gandhi faced his tragic end. Nathuram Godse, a Hindu nationalist, fired three bullets into his chest, and he reportedly died instantly.
