Massive fire breaks out in Kolkata's Baghbazar

25 fire engines reached the spot but locals protested for arriving late.


A major fire broke out at a slum in the Baghbazar area of Kolkata on Wednesday evening, the police said. The fire burnt several houses in the slum which is on Kshirode Vidyavinode Avenue beside the Bagbazar Women's College near the Chitpore Lock Gate Bridge. At least 25 fire engines reached the spot and were busy dousing the fire till late evening, the police said. No casualty has been reported so far.

Although the cause of fire is not known, several continuous cylinder explosions were heard by the locals. As per the locals, Ma Sarada's house was also burnt in the fire. Locals acted swiftly and managed to evacuate a number of people from their houses. However, the fire engulfed several houses and locals protested against the firefighters and the police as they alleged that firefighters did not reach the spot on time.Traffic came to a standstill due to the fire and protests.
