Simdega/ Jharkhand: Mob lynching is been a serious issue increasing day by day in the country. A man was lynched in Jharkhand's Simdega by a mob for allegedly hurting religious sentiments by cutting a tree.

The disturbing incident took place in the Kolebira Police Station area on Tuesday afternoon. The victim has been identified as Sanju Pradhan.

According to the police officials, around 100 to 150 people lynched the victim to death as he had hurt the religious sentiments by cutting and selling parts of a particular tree.

As per the senior Simdega Police personnel, "This tree has religious importance for the Munda community and they are very sentimental about it. The deceased had cut these trees in October 2021. This had hurt the sentiments. Today a large number of people held a meeting and decided to beat him which led to the victim's death."

Taking notes from the complaint raised by the family of the victim, they told the police that the mob first beat him with sticks and bricks. They put him on fire after he died.

While investigating the disturbing case of mob lynching, Superintendant of Police, Simdega Dr. Shams Tabrez, said "Body has been sent for postmortem. He died of beating or due to fire will be ascertained after autopsy. FIR is being registered with appropriate sections. Identification of accused is going on."

Worth mentioning, Jharkhand Assembly passed the Prevention of Mob Violence and Mob Lynching Bill, 2021 in December last year.  It provides for jail terms ranging from three years to life imprisonment and fines of up to Rs25 lakh against those involved in mob lynching leading to the “injury or death” of an individual.
