MP farmer commits suicide, leaves a note addressed to PM Modi

The farmer's family said his crop was spoiled due to which he was unable to pay the electricity bill of Rs 87,000.

A 35-year-old farmer committed suicide due to alleged harassment by an electricity distribution company over unpaid electricity bill in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh. In the suicide note addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Munendra Rajput wrote that his body should be handed over to the government so that they can sell every part of his body and clear his dues.

The farmer's family members alleged that the power company had seized his flourmill and motorbike over the electricity dues that amounted to Rs 87,000. They said that his crop was spoiled due to which he was unable to pay the hefty amount. Later, the company had sent a notice to the family after which they seized his mill and bike.  "When there are scams by big politicians and businessmen, government employees don't take any action. If they take a loan, they get enough time to repay or the loan is waived. But if a poor person takes even a small amount of loan, the government would never ask him as to why he was unable to repay the loan. Instead, he is insulted in public," read the farmer's note.

Munendra is survived by three daughters and a son, all below 16 years of age. Police are investigating the matter.
