Mumbai: One dies as fire erupts on 19th floor of One Avighna Park tower

Reportedly, 14 fire tenders reached the spot and doused the blaze by 1:25 pm.


At least one person died as a major fire broke out on the 19th floor of the 60-storey luxury residential tower, One Avighna Park tower in Lalbaug area of Mumbai around noon on Friday. A level-4 blaze erupted at around 11:51 am in the high rise building located at Currey Road.

Soon the fire department came into action and the fire brigade team rushed to the site. Reportedly, 14 fire tenders reached the spot and doused the blaze by 1:25 pm.

A person, identified as Arun Tiwari, 30, died after he jumped from the 19th floor of the building in panic, according to Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar. He was taken to the King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital at around 12:45 pm but was declared brought dead by the hospital. Soon, the visuals surfaced on social media of a man falling from the building.

As per the fire brigade officials, 26 people were rescued from the incident site and were safe with no injuries. Ms Pednekar, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) chief Iqbal Chahal and other senior district officials reached the spot. 

Mr. Chahal has ordered a probe into the matter. However, the reason behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. Mr. Chahal said that fire department officials reached the spot at around 11:55 am but the blaze had reached the 20th floor by then. He informed that though the fire has been doused, the officials are yet to ensure that it does not erupt again.

Reportedly, the fire evacuation mock drill was conducted a few days ago. Meanwhile, Ms. Pednekar said that the fire fighting team cannot be held accountable for the death of one person.
