Mumbai: Supreme Court allowed to remove 177 trees from Aarey forest

Mumbai: on Monday the Supreme Court allowed the Mumbai Metro Corporation limited to remove 177 trees from the Aarey forest. However, the top court observed that the Mumbai Metro has made an attempt to overreach the court’s jurisdiction, and directed it to pay Rs 10 lakh fine within two weeks for felling of trees in Aarey forest beyond permission.

 

A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices P S Narasimha and J B Pardiwala said for Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation limited (MMRCL) it was improper to move the tree authority for felling of any trees in excess of 84. "MMRCL Within a period of two weeks should give an amount of 10 lakh to conservator of forests. The conservator shall ensure that afforestation which has been directed is completed,” the bench said.

 

In Mumbai people were suffering from sunstroke, as one more patient died in Navi Mumbai. The death toll had increase up to 12. On Sunday earlier at least 11 people were died die to sunstroke while attending the ‘Maharashtra Bhushan’ award function, by lakhs of people, which held in an open ground in Kharghar area of Maharashtra’s Raigad district. 

 

On Monday the state Aam Aadmi party said, Chief Minister Ekanth Shinde should take moral responsibility and resign.  However, it said, “We do know it’s not going to happen as they are least concerned about people.” Meanwhile, CM Shinde announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for of the kin of the deceased.
