Munawwar Rana, Acclaimed Poet, Passes Away at Age 71

Demise in Lucknow Marks the End of an Era in Urdu Literature…


Renowned Urdu poet Munawwar passed away at 71 in PGI Hospital, Lucknow, after experiencing a cardiac arrest on Sunday.

 

Rana, born on November 26, 1952, is celebrated for his role in Urdu literature, particularly for his ghazals. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem 'Shahdaba' but returned the honor, citing 'intolerance' in the country.

 

Additionally, he received accolades such as the Ameer Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr. Zakir Hussain Award, and Saraswati Samaj Award.

 

"He underwent a 14 to 15-day hospitalization due to illness. Initially admitted to Medanta in Lucknow, he was later transferred to SGPGI, where he passed away around 11 pm today," stated his son Tabrez Rana to PTI.
