National Pollution Control Day: History, Significance and Theme

National Pollution Control Day celebrated amidst Corona Threat


The National Pollution Prevention Day on December 2 is observed every year in the memorial of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy in 1984. The disastrous incident of the deadly gas leak took away the lives of many innocent people and many are still suffering the effects of this tragedy. The scary tragedy occurred at the Union Carbide India Limited pesticide plant in Madhya Pradesh. To create awareness about the adverse effect of pollution, 2 December is observed as National Pollution Control Day.

The major objective of observing this day is to spread information and knowledge of managing and controlling the industrial disaster and at the same time prevent pollution produced by industrial processes and human negligence.

The theme for this year is based on the goal of raising awareness towards causes of pollution and the measures by which pollution can be curbed in the environment. This year more emphasis has been put on ways that one can put to manage pollution threats in the country and bring citizens attention to the growing concerns of pollution.
