Netflix To Give Away Free Access For One Weekend To Its Indian Users Exclusively

Netflix plans to declare a free access to Netflix's website for a weekend as a part of a test to expand its reach in the country


Netflix plans on to organize a promotional offer called ‘Stream Fest’ which would last 48hours from the 4th of December this year. This Netflix & Chill offer is created exclusively for the Indian consumers market only. This was first reported by TechChurn that cites a top company executive and also states that the 48hrs free access is a part of Netflix’s plan to expand its business in India. This experimental run is done by the company amid the Over The Top(OTT)  platforms slow growth.The company reported slow user growth by the end of September last month. The first month free trial scheme that it offered to its user was recently brought to a halt, all around the US.

Greg Peters the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Product Officer at Netflix said “Netflix still has a plan to keep experimenting with new ways to lure potential customers in many parts of the world” as per the TechChurn report. Peters also said that one of the ways to lure the customers is by giving away free weekend access to Netflix in different markets.

Netflix is currently competing alongside Disney+Hotstar,Amazon Prime Video and “technically three dozen additional services”. They chose India as the first market to test this idea. Peter said that they “will see how that goes” from here. Peter also said “it would be a great way to expose a bunch of new people to the amazing stories that we have,the service and how it works…and hopefully get a bunch of those folks to sign up”.

Netflix has however not mentioned anything on when they plan on to roll out the new experiment from the market. India has not been chosen for the first time by Netflix for this kind of an experiment or test of new ideas. A monthly mobile plan was tested in the country’s capital city New Delhi before it was introduced as a permanent tire across the country last year and then later went on to a dozen markets.

This ‘Stream Fest’ is exclusively available only to the non Netflix subscribers in order to convert them into permanent Netflix subscribers.

Netflix also partnered with Jio Platforms recently to bundle its application on the company's fiber broadband service.
