A mother has sold her child to survive poverty


The story of selling a child in Odisha is not new, it goes with a poverty-ridden family which sell their babies for their selfish basic needs. In 1985, the sale of 2-year-old tribal girl Banita to a blind man for as little as Rs 40 and a Saree by her sister-in-law Phanas Punji brought the poverty of the state into the limelight.

Odisha women were recently detained by the police on Wednesday.  She has been allegedly selling her nine-year-old daughter for Rs15,000 to the childless couple in Sambalpur District.  The following complaint by the NGO child-line at Sambalpur police station. The police have immediately taken the action on the complaint.The woman is in her late thirties and she is a labor contractor who has been out of work since the lock-down, in an interview with her father, he told that she has already given her 5 children and her husband a few months ago.

Officials from the district child helpline raid the house of the couple who bought the child. “They told us that they have adopted the child and has demanded the lead document. But none of the parties could flourish the documents. We then approached the police.”

During the investigation with police the women reviled the name of the buyers. The deal has done thought the legal notarized affidavit. The child officer Sanjay Sagar told that the child is now in the under of child welfare committee with all the care. The welfare said that they try to hard to control the child selling in the sate.
