A mother has sold her child to survive poverty
The story of selling a child in Odisha is not new, it goes with a poverty-ridden family which sell their babies for their selfish basic needs. In 1985, the sale of 2-year-old tribal girl Banita to a blind man for as little as Rs 40 and a Saree by her sister-in-law Phanas Punji brought the poverty of the state into the limelight.
Odisha women were recently detained by the police on Wednesday. She has been allegedly selling her nine-year-old daughter for Rs15,000 to the childless couple in Sambalpur District. Officials from the district child helpline raid the house of the couple who bought the child. “They told us that they have adopted the child and has demanded the lead document. But none of the parties could flourish the documents. We then approached the police.”
