Nitish Kumar: To take oath as CM for the 8th time today!

Janata Dal leader Nitish Kumar to take oath as Bihar CM today…

Nitish Kumar has ended his alliance with the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) and now leading the Janata Dal (united), Nitish Kumar is likely to take oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister again. Tejashwi Yadav would become the deputy CM during Kumar’s time. However, If Nitish Kumar really returned to power this would be his 8th time serving as the Chief Minister of Bihar.

Here’s a preview of his political journey so far:

Nitish Kumar started his career supporting the Janata Dal backed by Lalu Prasad Yadav, as leader of the opposition in the Bihar assembly in 1989. In 1994, Nitish joined Samata Party with George Fernandes. However, Nitish lasted 2 years in the Samata Party. In 1996, he joined the BJP and became BJP’s minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee cabinet.

In 2000, Nitish served the cabinet for the first time as the Chief Minister of Bihar for a little over 7 days. However, he then resigned from the position after taking oath as the NDA and allies had 151 seats. RDJ bagged 159 on the other hand, but both parties fell short of the required 163 mark.

Again in 2005, in BJP, JD(U) alliance Nitish returned to power as an NDA member. Just after a short while, in 2010 Nitish’s party came to power along with BJP as an ally and he became the Chief Minister of Bihar for a second time. In 2014, Nitish however stepped down from the position again. He was backed as the Chief Minister with support from the RJD and the Congress just within a year.

In 2020, Nitish took oath as the Bihar Chief Minister for the seventh time with support from the BJP. NDA had bagged 125 seats in the Bihar Legislative assembly of 243 seats. Out of these, BJP won 74 seats, JD(U) won 43 and 8 were won by two other NDA constituents.

If Nitish Kumar swears and takes an oath for the Chief Minister of Bihar cabinet today, this will be his 8th time serving the position.
