No 12th Class Marks, Common Entrance For University Admission

The exam will be computer-based in the first week of July.

New Delhi: Ahead of the new batches in the Undergraduate in Universities, the University Grants Commission (UGC) announced that all central universities funded by it, including the Delhi University. All the Universities will have to use the new Common University Entrance Test (CUET) scores to admit students to undergraduate programs.

According to the officials, the CUET is scheduled to be conducted in the first week of July when most of the board exams would have been completed.

Moreover, the application process will be online and start in the first week of April. The exam also tends to be taken as a computer-based test.

In an official interview by NDTV, UGC chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar said the exam process will be easy in terms of technology. "Students don't have to have high proficiency in using computers. Today, almost every student can use a smartphone. They can go to the test center and use the mouse to choose the answer in the multiple-choice options," the chairperson added.

Taking notes from the officials, the entrance test will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The UGC has made it compulsory for all the central universities and is also asking all state, Deemed-to-be, and private universities to use the common entrance test scores for admissions to undergraduate programs across the country.

The UGC chairperson Kumar said "one nation, one entrance test" will be a great relief for students across the country. "As a result of this, students need not have to write different kinds of entrance tests," he said.

Anyone who has passed class 12 exams is eligible to take the common entrance test. "However, class 12 marks may be used by universities to set admission criteria," the UGC chairperson added.

So, even though the universities will have to admit undergraduate students based on the common test, they are free to set a minimum benchmark for class 12 marks in deciding eligibility to get admitted in their respective institutions.

While speaking on the syllabus, Mr. Kumar said, the syllabus of the entrance test will be mirrored with the Class 12 model syllabus of the NCERT.
