Northeast a new stronghold of BJP, Congress failing to make an impression in the region

Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland elections results out today

Tripura, Meghalaya, and Nagaland Election Results: Today sees the announcement of the results of the assembly elections in Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Tripura. Trends show that the BJP-led alliance is comfortably ahead in Tripura and Nagaland, while the NPP is gaining ground in Meghalaya. Tripura assembly elections were held on February 16, and 89.95 percent of the 28.14 lakh voters cast ballots. On February 27, 2023, elections for Meghalaya and Nagaland assemblies were held.

If current trends continue, the BJP will retain its iron grip on the northeastern region, with governments in as many as seven of the eight states. Meanwhile, the Congress, which once held a commanding position in the northeast, failed to make an impression in all three states this year. The biggest setback for Congress came in the multi-cornered election in Meghalaya. While the party was the single-largest in 2018, its seat share fell to single digits this year. In Tripura, the debutant Tipra Motha, led by royal scion Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, made an impressive debut with leads in 12 seats, according to available trends.

Hekhani Jakhalu, who created history on Thursday by becoming the first woman to be elected to the Nagaland assembly, said, "This is only the first step. We need to do many good things in the future". Jakhalu, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate for the Dimapur III seat defeated her nearest rival Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) by 1,536 votes, the Election Commission of India, said.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha received his winning certificate on Thursday after winning the Town Bardowali constituency. He defeated Asish Kumar Saha of the Congress Party by 1,257 votes. The majority mark in the 60-member Tripura assembly is 30, and exit polls predicted a clear advantage for the BJP over its rivals in the state. "We had previously stated that the BJP would return to power with a landslide victory, and the results thus far indicate that we are forming the government. I thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and all party workers "Saha stated.

Thanking the people of Meghalaya for voting for the National People's Party (NPP), chief minister Conrad K Sangma said on Thursday that the party was still a few seats short of a majority and that he would wait for the final results before deciding how to proceed. As voting in the February 27 polls began, the NPP had won five seats and was leading in 21 other constituencies. "I thank the people of our state for having voted for our party. We appreciate it. We are still short of numbers and are awaiting final results before deciding how to proceed "Sangma explained.
