Operation Ganga: 16,000 Civilians Rescued From Ukraine

Union Minister V Muraleedharan praised Indian Embassy.


New Delhi: Amidst the Russia-Ukrainian war, the Indian Govt. launched Operation Ganga to evacuate the Indians stranded in Ukraine. According to the Union Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, thousands of Indian nationals are being brought back from Ukraine under Operation Ganga. Union Minister also praised the efforts taken by the Indian Embassies to help people in conflict-ridden Ukraine.

While speaking in an official interview by the news agency ANI, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, V Muraleedharan said, "Out of 20,000 Indian citizens, we have been able to evacuate more than 16,000 citizens. Around 3,000 citizens are still there in the neighboring countries of Ukraine. Around 600 students are there in Sumy area."

"The Embassy is making arrangements to evacuate them," he said.

To evacuate the stranded Indians, the Central Govt. arranged for flights from neighboring countries of Ukraine for the evacuation of Indian students under 'Operation Ganga'.

To overcome the situation between the two nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak to both Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky and Russia's Vladimir Putin on Monday, officials said.

Meanwhile, tensions have escalated following Russia's military action in Ukraine and the government has arranged flights from countries neighboring Ukraine for the evacuation of Indian students under 'Operation Ganga'. 

Several rescued Indians shared their heart wrenching stories and condition of Ukraine after landing in their motherland.

Taking notes from the efforts of Operation Ganga, the Indian government on Sunday said that since February 22, it has so far evacuated nearly 16,000 Indian students from Ukraine through flights from Ukraine's neighboring countries.
