The New Delhi Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh said on Saturday that thousands of orphan children, along with those who lost their parents due to Covid-19, will get an opportunity to continue higher education with university's new initiative to reserve seats for them for free of cost.

 

Without any discrimination on any basis the university will be responsible for providing education to such student’s perusing higher education, the vice chancellor said.

 

From the next academic year the varsity have decided to reserve seats for each to its undergraduate and postgraduate programs for orphan students under supernumerary quota.

 

These students will also be exempted from any kind of expenses, payment or fees, he added.

 

On Friday the decision was taken during a meeting of the Executive Council.

 

Vice chancellor Singh said, "Every year this initiative will help thousands of children. We are moving forward out-of Covid. During the pandemic many children lost their parents. The initiative will help such students." At both programs undergraduate and postgraduate in all colleges and departments of the University, one seat will be reserved for orphan students.

 

"The University of Delhi understand the importance of giving higher education in the youth of the country, including students who lost their parents and unfortunately become orphans," he said.

 

For the admission process and continuation of education of such students in the university or colleges will be funded from the University Welfare Fund or the College Students Welfare Fund.

 

The vice chancellor said, in the year 2035, this step would help to achieve 50 percent gross enrolment ratio (GER) in higher education.
