Pakistan: a huge drop in Eid Shopping

This year in Pakistan retail sales have witnessed a huge drop compared with last year during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, retailers say.

 

On Saturday the lead-up to Eid al-Fitr is expected in Pakistan while the end of the month of Ramadan; usually sees the highest sales of the year. 

 

But this year, the country is experiencing a crippling economic crisis.

 

"Across all categories, except women's clothing there has been a 20 percent reduction in sales," Tariq Mehboob, chairman of the Chain Store Association Pakistan (CAP) and CEO of Royal Tag, a clothing brand for men, told. 

 

Inflation clocked in at 35 percent in March, fuelled by a depreciating currency, a rollback in subsidies, and the imposition of higher tariffs to secure a bailout package of $1.1bn from the International Monetary Fund.

 

More than 47 percent of food inflation has increased, and there is a change in the wealthier professional class lifestyle as they have change to deal with rising prices.
