By the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)

Pakistan has banned Wikipedia after threatening the crowd-sourced online encyclopedia over what it has labelled “sacrilegious content”, the Wikipedia Foundation announced on Saturday.

Wikipedia has banned in Pakistan after Earlier social media giants Facebook and YouTube have also been blocked by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority due to content which deemed blasphemous, which is a sensitive issue for Muslims majority in Pakistan. Their ban was lifted.

On Saturday the website was blocked after non-compliance with the institution's order, according to local media outlet, PTA spokesperson said.

Without further delay or elaborating on the content in question, the website had until late Friday to heed the warning, on Wednesday the PTA said.

"Wikipedia services in the country has degraded by PTA, due to not blocking or removing sacrilegious contents from the website," the authority stated.
