PM Modi to inaugurate renovated Jallianwala Bagh memorial in Amritsar today

Four new galleries have been created through adaptive reuse of underutilized buildings in the complex, said the Ministry of Culture.


The renovated Jallianwala Bagh memorial in Punjab’s Amritsar will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (Saturday) at 6.25 pm via video conferencing. On April 13, the modernized monument was planned to be inaugurated, to mark 102 years of the massacre where 379 people had been killed but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the dates had been shifted.

The chairperson of the Jallianwala Bagh Memorial Trust, PM Modi will dedicate the memorial to the public during the ceremony which will also include G Kishan Reddy, Amarinder Singh, Governor V P Singh Badnore, and parliamentarians from the region. Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh Chief Ministers will also attend the event. Opposition leader,Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who is also a member of the trust, has also been invited to the ceremony.

Besides, the political leaders who will join via video conferencing, the Ministry of Culture and families of the martyrs will be present offline for the ceremony. The entry and exit points have been repositioned, and around the main memorial, a lotus pond has been built. Four new galleries have been created through adaptive reuse of underutilized buildings in the complex, said the Ministry of Culture.

This is being done to showcase the history of the events of Punjab during that period, through projection mapping and 3D representation, including art installations. A light-and-sound show has also been arranged to showcase the events of April 13, 1919.
