Poet Imroz, Aged 97, Passes Away

Artist Imroz, Known for Ties with Amrita Pritam, Leaves a Legacy

Renowned poet and artist Inderjeet, also known as Imroz, famous for his lifelong connection with poet Amrita Pritam, passed away in Mumbai on Friday at the age of 97 due to age-related issues, according to family sources.

PTI was informed by Alka Kwatra, Pritam's daughter-in-law, that Imroz's final rites took place at the Dahanukarwadi crematorium in Kandivli, north Mumbai, in the presence of family and close friends.

Pritam's granddaughter lit the funeral pyre during the cremation ceremony.

Amiya Kunwar, a close associate of Imroz, mentioned that he had been dealing with health issues for several days and was hospitalized before his passing.

Imroz, born on January 26, 1926, in Lyallpur, Punjab, crossed paths with Amrita Pritam in the 1950s, a time when she had already gained prominence in Punjabi literature. Their companionship endured for more than 40 years until Pritam's passing in 2005.

Following Pritam's declining health, Imroz initiated his journey into poetry, and even after her demise, he continued to pen numerous poems dedicated to her memory.

It's noted that one of Pritam's highly acclaimed works, 'Main tainu phir milangi,' is believed to have been dedicated to Imroz.

The noted artist Prakash Joshi expressed that the demise of Imroz marks the conclusion of an "era and a poetic dream."

Joshi remarked, "The relationship between Imroz and Pritam was a beautiful chapter in the field of Indian art and literature."
