Powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.0 hits Turkey and Greece

24 people died while 8000 injured after dreadful disaster


An earthquake with magnitude of 7.0 hit the coast of Aegean Sea, Turkey and parts of Greece on Friday. Fahrettin Koca, health minister of Turkey announced that 24 have died and 800 people have been injured due to the wreckage. 38 ambulances, 35 rescue teams and two ambulance helicopters were working in Izmir, he tweeted. While, Suleyman Soylu , interior minister of Turkey said six building collapsed in western Izmir province.

Izmir is identified as the epicenter of the earthquake and as many as 196 aftershocks were felt with 23 hitting over magnitude of 4.0. Earthquake was so strong that it was felt across the regions of Marmara and Aegean, including Istanbul but Istanbul’s governor denied any damage. In Izmir’s province 20 buildings were collapsed and 70 people had been rescued from under the rubble, Tunc Soyer, Izmir’s Mayor said.

Turkish media showed wreckage of a multiple buildings where smoke was filmed in several places and people started rescue efforts to help people who were under the rubble.

Meanwhile, in Greece the earthquake was recorded on magnitude of 6.7, worse hitting the town of Karlovasi on Samos. According to the reports, the earthquake caused mini-tsunami on the Aegean island of Samos due to which some old buildings were collapsed and people with minor injuries were admitted to the Samos hospital. Later, it was reported that two teenagers have died as a building collapsed on them.

Tremors were also felt in the Greek capital, Athens. As the water rose above the dock in the main harbour of Samos and flooded street, residents are asked to stay away from the coastline and tsunami warning has been issued. Also camps have been setup in both the areas with medical and other emergency services with capacity of around 2,000 people to refuge them.
