Presenting the Economic Survey 2020-2021

Economic survey to be presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman

The Economic Survey 2020-2021 will be presented by Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in parliament on Friday as the budget session is all set to commence. Usually, the economic survey is showcased a day prior to the budget, but this year as the Budget follows the weekend, the Economic Survey will be shown earlier than usual. The Budget will be presented on February 1.

After exhibiting the Economic Survey, Chief Economic Adviser KV Subramanian will address a press conference at 2:30 pm. Presenting an economic survey in front of the budget, gives a review of the economy of the current financial year and projects path for the coming year. Due to the economic disruptions on account of Covid-19 pandemic, this year holds major importance. It will also forecast India's GDP (gross domestic product) growth for 2021-22. Since the budget has gone paperless this year, so all documents as well as the economic survey, will be accessible online soon after the authenticated copies are laid on the Table of the House, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has said. The economic survey’s copies can be downloaded from www.indiabudget.gov.in .

The exercise of presenting the Economic Survey dates back to 1950-51 and until 1964, it used to be shown along with the Union Budget. But 1964 onwards, the ministry started to announce the survey a day prior to the Budget.

The Economic Survey is an important document not only for GDP estimation. Each year, it has a theme but since 2018 CEA Subramanian seized attention with his unique ideas. And his innovation’s first look was the 2019 economic survey. That year, the whole survey was printed in pink, conveying a message for women empowerment and gender equality.

Subsequently in 2019-2020, the theme was wealth creation and KV Subramanian's  'The Economics of a plat of food in India : Thalinomics’ became a talking point.
