Presidential elections result out: Droupadi Murmu Elected!!

Droupadi Murmu First Tribal Woman President in the Country...


NDA’s presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu becomes the first tribal woman to be elected as the President of India. Murmu defeated her rival opposition candidate, Yashwant Sinha, by a massive margin vote of 947 votes. Murmu bagged a total of 64.03% of electoral votes against Sinha who bagged 35.97%. 

 

Droupadi Murmu is a 64-year-old woman, who hails from the Rairangpur area of the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha. She belongs to the Santhal tribe to which legendary freedom fighter Birsa Munda also belonged. She is the only second former member of the BJP after President Ram Nath Kovind to be elected as the President. She won votes from a total of 2,824 electors, including 540 MPs and Sinha won a share of 1,877 electors including 208 MPs. 

 

Murmu needed a total of 5,28,491 votes to win the election which she had bagged within the third round of counting. After the third round of counting, she had bagged 2161 votes which translates to 5,77,777 in terms of values of votes. The total value of valid votes in the parliament and in the state, assemblies was 10,56,982 and Murmu had already crossed the 50% mark by the third round. By then, Yashwant Sinha had won 1058 votes which translates to 2,61,062. 

 

The Secretary General of Rajya Sabha informed that 4754 votes were polled, out of which 4701 were valid and only 53 were invalid. PC Mody, secretary general of Rajya Sabha declared, “As 1st preference votes secured by Draupadi Murmu were greater than the requisite quota, I in my capacity as Returning Officer declare that she has been elected to office of President of India”. 

 

Droupadi Murmu is the first tribal woman to hold the country’s highest constitutional position.
