Protest Ahead Of Hijab Hearing

Two Groups Protesting at the Gates Of MGM College in Karnataka

A huge crowd of students with two groups, one group wearing the hijab and another waving saffron scarves and headscarves seen protesting outside a college in Karnataka's Udupi.

This protest comes ahead of the High Court hearing on a petition questioning hijab restrictions on campus. The students were heard chanting Jai Shri Ram slogans.

The administrations are struggling to control the crowd outside the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) College campus.

According to the statement given by Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai issued a statement on Tuesday on the ongoing hijab row in the Udupi district.

He said, “All the concerned people (in the Udupi hijab row) should keep the peace and let children study.”

He said that the matter will be presented in the Karnataka High Court and that everyone should wait for their decision.

The CM Protected his government's stand on the issue and said that rules regarding uniformity in schools and colleges have been mentioned in the Constitution and those will be followed. He further added, "There is a rule in the constitution regarding uniformity in schools and colleges.

The rules are also clearly mentioned in the Karnataka Education Act. All these rules are clear as to what's to be followed. We have issued a notification.

On January 1, six Muslim students of a government Pre-University college in Karnataka's Udupi were excluded from attending classes wearing a hijab.

The college administration presented a new uniform policy behind the reason for the ban.

The issue has now spilled over to other government colleges in Udupi with several students protesting against a ban on hijab.

Since then, multiple incidents have taken place all over Karnataka where Muslim girls have come to classes wearing hijabs and Hindu students began wearing saffron shawls as a sign of protest.
