An increase in the retirement age leads to protests in France...


On Thursday major cities in France experienced protests against the rise of the retirement age because of the protest the schools, Businesses, and Transport services including flights and train services decided to a dead stop. The cities include Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, Nantes, and Nice.

According to the France Interior Minister, Nearly one million people protest against the government’s plan that the retirement age will rise for many workers including 80,000 people in Paris. They throw bottles, rocks, and fireworks at the riot to the police.

The France Education Ministry mentioned that approximately 40% of primary school teachers and one-third of high school teachers went on strike.

The Eiffel Tower was also closed to the visitors.

As per the information the legislation requires French citizens to work until 64 which is currently 62 to qualify for the pension. The first day of the strike and protest against pension reform was announced by the President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

France spent more than 14% of its GDP on the state pension in 2018 which is way more than other countries said by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The city transport authority RATP posted on Twitter that the metro lines will be fully or partially closed in Paris.
