Punjab: Charanjit Singh Channi sworn in as new CM, Rahul Gandhi attends oath ceremony

Charanjit Singh Channi took oath as the first Dalit Sikh Chief Minister.


Charanjit Singh Channi on Monday was sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Punjab ending speculation of who would be the next CM after Captain Amarinder Singh's resignation. This sudden change has come just four months before Punjab will go into polls. Mr Channi took oath as the first Dalit Sikh Chief Minister.

The swearing-in ceremony took place at Raj Bhavan in Chandigarh in presence of a few selected guests, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. OP Soni and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa were sworn in as the deputy Chief Ministers of Punjab. The oath of office was administered by Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mr Channi on being sworn in as the new Chief Minister of the state. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati also congratulated the newly appointed CM.
