Punjab government makes the Punjabi language mandatory for schools

On Friday,  the Punjab Chief Minister, Charanjit Singh Channi announced that Punjabi will now be a compulsory subject for all the students in the state. 

According to the tweet the chief minister said Punjabi will be compulsory for all students in the state from class 1 to 10. Adding more it said the language will also be mandatory in offices as well."To promote the mother tongue, Punjabi has been made a compulsory subject for all the students in classes 1 to 10 in Punjab schools and will be fined up to rupees 2 lakh for violation. Now, Punjabi is mandatory in offices. Also,  Punjabi will be written on top of all the boards in the state".


Many other states run their schools with their regional languages, Maharashtra has mandated its Marathi languages in school, Gujarat has the Gujarati language.  Also, other states have their language to emphasize the mother tongue.


The Punjab Government's move came to to the ckdrop of a recent announcement by the central board of secondary education (CBSE) that the status of Punjabi was being moved from major to the minor subject.
