Rahul Gandhi, Kapil Sibal slam Centre as India slips in Global Hunger Index

Pointing out at the current GHI score, Kapil Sibal tweeted that 93% of children between 6 to 23 months of age do not get a minimum acceptable diet.

Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Kapil Sibal slammed the Centre as India slipped from 94th spot in 2020 to 101st position in 2021 in Global Hunger Index (GHI), falling behind Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. Rahul Gandhi took a dig at the government on Wednesday by tweeting on Twitter that the ranking "reveals a colossal failure in Govt policy and blows the lid off the PM’s hollow “sabka vikas” claim, parroted by Modia.”

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal also hit out at the central government by saying that Prime Minister Modi should concentrate less on politics and more on children as they are the future of the country. Pointing out at the current GHI score, he added that 93% of children between 6 to 23 months of age do not get a minimum acceptable diet.

Last year, the government had promised that it would achieve the goal of "zero hunger" by 2030. Mr Sibal mocked the claims of the government by congratulating PM Modi for eradicating "poverty, hunger, making India a global power, for our digital economy,.....so much more."

According to the GHI website on Thursday, 18 countries, including China, Kuwait and Brazil topped the GHI ranking with less than a GHI score of five. GHI tracks hunger and malnutrition across countries.
The GHI report has been jointly prepared by an Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organisation Welt Hunger Hilfe. They termed the current rank of India as "alarming" as the GHI score has decelerated from 38.8 in 2000 to the range of 28.8 – 27.5 between 2012 and 2021.
