Railway Bridge collapse

At least 26 were killed at a construction site...

In the Mizoram state, the incident took place close to Sairang. According to local media sources, up to 40 workmen may have been present when a portion of the bridge collapsed.

The railway authorities have launched an investigation even though the incident's cause is yet unclear. Up until now, three people have been saved.

This includes an injured worker who had to be hoisted down from one of the bridge's 100m-tall (328ft) pillars.

The incident took place over the Kurung River, around 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Aizawl, the Mizoram state capital.

The office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a statement saying, "All possible assistance is being given to those affected."

According to the statement, the government will give the surviving relatives of the deceased about 200,000 rupees (£1,900; $2,400).

According to railway officials, all of the victims are from West Bengal.

Home Minister Lalchamliana of Mizoram said, "Words cannot reflect the depth of sadness and sympathy for the families touched by this tragic occurrence.

The 51km long Khamrang-Sihhmui railway line is scheduled to be finished in December after work started over two years ago.

In India, accidents on these kinds of construction sites are rather regular.

In the western Indian state of Gujarat, a pedestrian suspension bridge fell in October of last year, killing over 140 people.
