Rainfall hits Bengaluru, the city faced severe water logging

India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted rain


Karnataka's capital Bengaluru on Thursday night witnessed heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in several parts of city on Thursday, disrupting normal life. Several houses, cars and vehicles have submerged in the water due to heavy rain in several areas of Bengaluru. 

 

Several parts of Karnataka capital - including Banashankari, Kathreguppe and Jaya Prakash Nagara were affected. People were also stranded in some places due to the downpour. 

 

After the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted rain, BBMP Cheif commissioner Gaurav Gupta directed all officials to get ready to immediately attend to complaints including water blockage on roads, traffic junctions, and tress falls. Addressing the emergency meeting, he warned the officials that "any failure to comply will lead to action against the officials." 

 

The city's administrative body - The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) - is carrying out an emergency operation in the waterlogging areas. BBMP's teams should immediately reach the places where tress/branches have fallen or wherever the rainwater gets blocked, and immediately resolve the issues," BBMP Cheif commissioner Gaurav Gupta said. Gupta also called to ensure a smooth flow of water in all the major storm - water drains in the city.

 

Instructing the officials, he directed them to ensure all zonal control rooms had the necessary equipment. He also directed the zone - wise senior officials to conduct meetings for the same. 

 

The IMD on April 10 had predicted light to moderate fairly widespread or scattered rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lighting in Kerala - Mahe and South interior Karnataka during the next five days. According to the weather department, the rainfall was expected due to the "cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area upto middle tropospheric levels." 

 

"Light to moderate fairly widespread/scattered rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm/ lightening very likely over Kerala - Mahe & South Interior Karnataka during next 5 days; over Lakshadweep during next 3 days and isolated rainfall over Tamilnadu - Puducherry - Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Rayalaseema and Coastal North Interior Karnataka during next 5 days," the weather office said. 

 

Meanwhile, the weather monitoring agency has predicted normal rainfall during the southwest monsoon season this year. As per the IMD, rainfall will be 96% to 104% of the Long Period Average (LPA) of 87 cm of the 1971- 2020 period. 

 

India had received normal rainfall during the four - month southwest monsoon season in 2019, 2020, 2021.
