Retired professor couple dies by Suicide

Fed up of being bedridden couple hangs themselves from a steel pipe

On Wednesday, a retired Delhi University professor couple allegedly hung themselves to death in Southeast Delhi’s Govindpuri area. Two notes were found on a table in which the couple said they were fed up of being bed ridden for months following a road accident in which they suffered injuries. It seems their frustration led them to take this drastic step.

Both deceased, Rakesh Kumar Jain who was 74-years-old used to teach at Shaheed Bhagat Singh College and his wife Usha Rakesh Kumar Jain who was 69-years-old had been a teacher at Maitreyi College. The couple lived with a caretaker Ajit, a resident of Tughlaqabad went to the house in the afternoon but the door was locked from inside. He rang the bell several times around 2:30 pm but no one responded. Then he  informed the daughter who lives near the house. They broke the lock and found the couple hanging from the steel pipe, the police officer said.

The police said, around 3:45 pm a PCR call was received at Govindpuri police station. The couple’s daughter Ankita who is 47-year-old and a resident of Greater Kailash-I, informed the police that she her parents have hung themselves from steel pipes. It was revealed that last year, the couple met with a car accident while going to Gonda in Uttar Pradesh to attend a wedding. While Rakesh suffered a spinal cord injury, his wife suffered multiple fractures.

Although recently they had started to walk again with the help of the caretaker but they weren’t feeling well because of age related issues. Esha Pandey, DCP (Southeast) said, “Our team has inspected the scene. Two suicide notes were found on the table. The couple wrote that they were fed up with their bedridden life due to multiple fractures after an accident. Nothing suspicious has been found yet”
