Sahara Group Founder Subrata Roy, 75, Passes Away

After prolonged illness...

Subrata Roy, the 75-year-old founder of the Sahara Group, passed away in Mumbai after battling a prolonged illness. He was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute (KDAH) on Sunday due to deteriorating health.

In a statement, Sahara India Pariwar expressed deep sorrow, announcing the passing of their respected leader, 'Saharasri' Subrata Roy Sahara. He, an inspirational figure and visionary, breathed his last on November 14, 2023, at 10:30 pm, succumbing to cardiorespiratory arrest after a prolonged struggle with complications arising from metastatic malignancy, hypertension, and diabetes.

On June 10, 1948, Subrata Roy was born in Araria, Bihar. He went on to establish a vast empire, diversifying into finance, real estate, media, and hospitality sectors.

Subrata Roy, after earning a degree in mechanical engineering from the Government Technical Institute in Gorakhpur, began his business journey in Gorakhpur. In 1976, he took over Sahara Finance and by 1978, transformed it into Sahara India Pariwar, evolving it into one of India's largest conglomerates. The group expanded into media with the launch of Rashtriya Sahara newspaper in 1992 and later ventured into television with Sahara TV, later renamed Sahara One.

The entire Sahara India Pariwar deeply mourns the loss of Saharasri ji, acknowledging him as a guiding force, mentor, and a source of inspiration for everyone privileged to work alongside him.

In 2014, the Supreme Court of India ordered the detention of Subrata Roy for non-appearance in court related to a dispute with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). This triggered a protracted legal struggle, leading to his incarceration in Tihar Jail. Subsequently, he was granted parole, securing his eventual release.
