SC Appointed Member Opts Out Of Committee

Farmer issue resolving committee member appointed by the SC opts out.

The four member committee was formed by the Supreme Court on Tuesday in order to resolve the ongoing farmers' protest in the nation's capital for over 50 days now in the borders of Delhi. One of the members of the SC formed committee was the Bhartiya Kisan Union President Bhupinder Singh Maan who stepped out of the committee saying that he did not wish to “compromise farmers’ interest.”  Ahead of the next round of talks between the farmers and the center scheduled for tomorrow this decision has been made by Mr Maan. The matter now goes back to the court for further orders.

Today Mr Maan had issued a statement that read “As a farmer myself and a union leader in view of prevailing sentiments and apprehensions among farm unions and the public in general, I am ready to sacrifice any position offered or given to me so as not to compromise the interest of Punjab and farmers of the country.” The committee was already rejected by the farmers’ group as they said the the SC formed panel group was already in favor of the farm laws and it was accused that the issue was being engineered by the government.

All the other appointed members of the committee who in the articles written in the media have expressed views in favor of the farm laws. Mr Maan was also one of the few farm leaders who were in support of the new farm laws when he was in the group of farmers who had met Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar in December. The SC committee apart from Mr Maan had agricultural economists Dr Pramod Kumr Joshi, Ashork Gulati and the Chief of the Shetkari Sangathan Anil Ghanwat.
