On Monday, 03 July 2023, Assam Police arrested a man for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl, murdering her, and then throwing her body in a river.
The incident was reported in Kamrup (Metro) district, in Guwahati.
Police sources said the girl was a Class 8 student who stepped out last week to recharge her phone and did not return.
On Friday, her body was found in the Digaru River at Sonapur. This initiated a protest by local residents at Sonapur police station. The protesters demanded immediate action and strict punishment for the culprit.
The police have now arrested an accused who is an auto-rickshaw operator. Police said he had admitted to the crime he has committed. Further investigation is going on, they said.
