Security increased around Jamia Millia Islamia due to CAA implementation

Police patrol northeast Delhi amid CAA implementation

On Tuesday morning, a significant police presence was observed around Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi, accompanied by tightened security measures across the city. Paramilitary forces conducted patrols and flag marches following the implementation of the Citizenship Act, 2019 by the Centre.

According to a senior police officer speaking to PTI, on Monday evening, a group of Jamia Millia Islamia students staged a protest against the implementation of the CAA on the campus. Subsequently, security was bolstered, and paramilitary personnel were deployed.

The CAA bill was passed in Parliament on December 11, 2019, sparking protests nationwide, notably in Delhi. The city experienced months-long anti-CAA demonstrations from 2019 to 2020, with Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh emerging as the focal points of the movement.

In early 2020, Delhi experienced communal riots in its northeastern areas related to the CAA issue, resulting in the loss of 53 lives and over 500 injuries.

Following the Centre's implementation of the CAA on Monday, which included the notification of rules four years after the law was passed, police in Delhi's northeast district identified 43 hotspots and conducted patrols in those areas.

According to an official, among the identified areas for patrols are Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Mustafabad, Bhajanpura, Khajoori Khas, and Seemapuri.

The official mentioned that paramilitary personnel conducted night patrols and flag marches in Shaheen Bagh, Jamia Nagar, and various parts of northeast Delhi on Monday. He added that the patrolling will continue on Tuesday as well.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Joy Tirkey stated, "Police and paramilitary personnel are closely monitoring to uphold law and order. We have identified 43 hotspots in northeast Delhi, and there has been heightened night patrolling in these areas." He added, "Ensuring the safety of every individual in Delhi's northeast district is our priority," as reported by PTI.

Additionally, the Delhi Police's cyber unit is actively monitoring social media platforms to prevent the dissemination of provocative posts and rumors, the police confirmed.

Another officer mentioned that the Delhi Police has conducted at least 29 meetings with peace committee members to ensure that people do not succumb to rumors. He stated that patrolling will be intensified in various parts of northeast Delhi, with the arrival of additional paramilitary personnel expected on Tuesday.

In southeast Delhi, paramilitary personnel conducted a flag march while local police patrolled on bikes.

With the unveiling of the CAA rules, which coincided with the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections, the Modi government will commence granting Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians from the three specified countries. The rules have been put into effect immediately, as stated in a gazette notification.
