Sharjeel Imam and Asif Imam Tanha, discharged by Delhi court after 4 years

Arrested during the Protest against CAA and NRC


Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam and student activists Asif Iqbal Tanha on Saturday in Delhi court released from all charges of a case regarding to violence that rises after a clash between Delhi police and People protesting against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Judge Arul Verma pronounced the order in Saket court additional sessions.

However, detailed order of the matter is still awaited.

Earlier both Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha were granted bail in the matter. However, Sharjeel would continue to be in jail under the stringent unlawful activities (prevention) act, or UAPA in February 2020 in the conspiracy case related to northeast Delhi riots.

After clash between the people protesting and the Delhi police against the CAA, police had registered an FIR under various sections of the Indian penal code, including rioting, connection with the communal violence that rises.

At Jamia Milia Islamia University as per the prosecution, Imam gave some speeches on December 13, 2019 and also at the aligarh muslim University on December 16, 2019, where he was threatened to cut off Assam and other states in northeast from the rest of India.
