BALWINDER SINGH SHOT DEAD


Shaurya Chakra award winner, Balwinder Singh, 62-year-old, was shot dead at his home around 7 a.m by two unidentified men who attacked him, one of them went up to his house and shot him an at point-blank range and the one the spot passed away.

" According to the officer, Gupta, he said - the details of the vehicle used by the two men is its registration number one being probed"
Mr Singh was well known for his fighting and surviving numerous attacks by terrorists on his home in 1990 and 1991 year. He has fought against terrorism for years. The security provided for Mr Singh was removed a year ago.Punjab chief minister Amrinder Singh was ordered by a special investigation team to look into the matter.

According to the statement, from Punjab Chief Minister it said -" The SIT headed by the Firozpur deputy general would provide all the Angle of the attack on Mr Singh and arrest the accused''. The CM has also directed DGP direction of general police, Dinkar Gupta for speedy investigation.

According to a government citation, in September 1990, Mr Singh and his family had survived a  deadly attack by at least 200 terrorists. Mr Singh, his brother and their wives fought off the terrorists - who had civil weapons - for five hours using their pistols and STEN-guns provided by the government. The terrorists finally retreated in the face of their resistance, the citation adds.

This bravery displayed by Mr Singh and his family had earned them towards the international award.
