Shivering New Year Eve Touches 3.3 Degree Celsius

Mercury dips lowest in Capital


Shivering at New Year's Eve, Delhi touched 3.3 degrees Celsius along with a windy cold wave, the lowest temperature recorded in the season so far. Foggy winds swept through the city lowering the temperature furthermore, stated the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

In Delhi the minimum temperature is 4 degrees below the normal at this time of the year. The city may get rainfall from January 2 night and another spell of intense cold wave is expected in the next week of January. According to the IMD, the mercury may drop further on New Year’s Eve and similar conditions are expected in parts of the city over the next three days.

According Kuldeep Srivastava chief of the regional forecasting centre of the IMD stated that, "Scattered to fairly widespread" due to a northern and western disturbance led to snowfall in some states like Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand and cold, dry northerly winds from the western Himalayas have brought the temperatures down in north India.

The air quality in National Capital was recorded in the "poor" category. The city's air quality index (AQI) was 237 at this morning 9 am. Officials at IMD stated  that the accelerated wind speed, up to 15 km per hour, are likely to scatter the pollutants.
