Special Parliament Session Begins

On Monday, 18 September 2023, a special five-day session of the parliament began with a discussion on the parliament's journey of 75 years.

There are eight bills to be discussed, including a controversial one on the appointment of Chief Election Commissioner.

On Tuesday, the sitting will shift to the new parliament building after a function in the central hall of the current building. A special session was also held when India completed 50 years of Independence. On 15 August 1997, a midnight session was convened.

The announcement of the Special Session came as a surprise in political circles with the parties preparing for assembly polls in five states later this year. Opposition parties have criticized the BJP-led central government for calling a special session of Parliament without disclosing the agenda.
