Economic Crisis in Sri Lanka!


On Sunday, The Sri Lanka Prime Minister's office issued a statement and denied all the rumors about PM Mahinda Rajapaksa's resignation. The Cabinet, except the PM, has, however, resigned.

 

The Prime Minister met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa amid the ongoing crisis in the country. According to sources, the meeting added to the speculations of the PM resigning.

 

Meanwhile, several important political decisions are expected to be taken during this meeting.

 

Widespread public protests were seen throughout the evening despite the imposition of curfew which is due to end on Monday morning. The enraged public has been demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

 

The government declared a state of emergency after an angry mob surrounded the private residence of Rajapaksa on 31 March 2022. A planned social media-triggered mass protest was scheduled for 3 April 2022. However, the government responded by imposing a 36-hour curfew.

 

Meanwhile, the prices have been at a peak in Sri Lanka amid Crisis. Schools are unable to conduct examinations owing to inadequate paper supply for printing question papers. Prices of essential commodities, including milk and rice have gone through the roof and people are forced to stand in long queues to recharge fuel. Power supply in various regions of the country has also been hit hard.

 

According to the IANS report, the worsening situation in the country has forced people to cross into India. Almost 16 Sri Lankan nationals entered Tamil Nadu Tuesday in two batches, said the news Agency.
