Stocks Improved In The Domestic Coal-Based Power Plants Slightly

India has been observing a coal shortage since the beginning of this year

Coal tops the charts when it comes to the leading primary source of energy for power generation in the country.

Even after new renewable energy conservation alternatives.

During the past two months specifically, the thermal power plants had critically low stocks of domestic coal.

However, significantly for the first time in nearly two months, the situation has improved.

This may imply higher production and improved transportation of coal in the country.

Central Electricity Authority (CEA) showed data of how as of Monday (June 20), only 74 of 150 power plants running on domestic coal in the country had critically low coal levels.

The national demand on the same day was 183,850 MW (peak), and the shortfall was barely 109 MW.

This suggests a record high power generation by Domestic coal-based plants from 1 June-16 June.

A senior official in the power ministry stated, “The situation started drastically improving from last week.

Since June 17, power plants having lower stocks has remained at 75 or even below.

Otherwise, till June 13, nearly 81 plants and more were running out of domestic coal having critically lower stocks than ever.

Between April and May, there were problems because almost 95 plants were having critically lower stocks.”

However, this improved situation may also be attributed to the onset of monsoon in north and northwestern India, nearly ending the heatwave.

The coal ministry mentioned that the rake supply from Coal India Limited has also increased by 25% from last year.
