A strong earthquake struck in the ocean off the archipelago, later a tsunami warning has been triggered and evacuation order issued to coastal dwellers on a remote Philipine Island.

On Tuesday around 9pm according to the United States Geological Survey 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck in the ocean off the coast of the eastern Philippines from Catanduanes Island, off the main island of Luzon, about 120km (75miles).

According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) the quake initially estimated was a magnitude of 6.3 one however the report of Philippine institute of volcanology and seismology states it at magnitude 6.6.

More damage usually cause by shallow quakes than deeper ones, but so far there have been not any reports of damage on Catanduanes.

The state seismological agency said that the quake had caused a “minor sea-level disturbance” and warned that tsunami waves of less than a metre high above normal tides would reach Catanduanes and Samar islands.
