Supreme Court gets 9 new judges including 3 women, strength rises to 33

The current strength of the Supreme Court is 24 but now with 9 more appointments, the strength of judges has risen to 33.


On Thursday, the Supreme Court with President Ram Nath Kovind's approval, appointed nine new judges to the Apex Court, of which 3 are women. A formal notification would be also provided subsequently. Justice BV Nagarathna is in line to be the country's first woman Chief Justice of India (CJI) in September 2027. Meanwhile, Justice Bela M Trivedi, Justice Hema Kohli, Justice CT Ravikumar, MM Sundresh, PS Narasimha. Abhay Shreeniwas Oka, Vikram Nath, and Jitendra Kumar Maheshwari have been appointed to the Supreme Court. 

The current strength of the Supreme Court is 24 but now with 9 more appointments, the strength of judges has risen to 33. Last week, The Centre approved all nine names recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment to the top court. As per the recommendation by the five-member Collegium led by CJI NV Ramana,  a 21-month-long deadlock ended with the appointment of new judges to the apex court. Meanwhile, Justices UU Lalit, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud, and L Nageswara Rao were part of the five-member Collegium.
