Supreme Court slams Centre for last-minute changes in NEET exam pattern

The plea has been filed by 41 post-graduate qualified doctors who aspire to become super specialists by qualifying NEET-SS, 2021.

The Supreme Court on Monday slammed the Centre for making last-minute changes in the post-graduate National Eligibility cum Entrance Test- Super Specialty (NEET SS) exam 2021 pattern. A bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and BV Nagarathna has directed the central government to hold meetings and submit a response to the plea on October 4.

The plea has been filed by 41 post-graduate qualified doctors who aspire to become super specialists by qualifying NEET-SS, 2021. They have filed a petition seeking direction to scrap the changes that have been made in the exam pattern.

Last week, the Supreme Court had issued notice to the Centre and National Medical Council (NMC) regarding the petition filed by the doctors. The apex court slammed the Centre by saying, "Don't treat these young doctors as footballs in the game of power" and said that they will not leave doctors in the hands of some "insensitive bureaucrats."

The top court observed that the exam notification was issued on July 23 and the syllabus was changed on August 31. The court noted that syllabus cannot be changed at the last-minute as students start preparing for exams months in advance. According to the changes, 60 percent marks questions which were earlier allotted for questions from super-speciality courses, that is, two optional courses opted by the aspirant, will now be based on the general medicines.
