Sushil Chandra appointed as the new CEC


President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Sushil  Chandra as the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Monday. Sunil Chandra will assume charge from Tuesday as a statement given by the Ministry also adding up the notification in the regard which has been issued by the legislative department. He replaces Sunil Arora who retired.

Chandra was appointed as an Election Commissioner on February 14, 2019, ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, and worked for the successful conduct of the general elections. He served the IRS for 38 years before taking charge as Election Commissioner. Furthermore, he was previously in the Indian Engineering Service before joining the IRS.

He is set to take office on May 14, 2022, and will oversee the conduct of assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Goa, Uttarakhand, and Manipur as the CEC.

Now the Election Commissioner, Chandra supervised assembly elections of more than 10 states and worked towards making the entire nomination process online. Although the online process will allow candidates to file e-nomination directly, making the system faster. Also, it allows the error-free feeding of the candidate's information and uploading of affidavits in the system. The information will be also available in the public domain through the Affidavit Portal and Voter Helpline App
